Am I The Father?
If you wish to test for paternity after pregnancy you may end using a home paternity test kit. These kits are available online and in many of the larger drugstores. Just as many men buy these kits as women, often they are burning with a desire to finally know: Am I the father? Kits can be successfully used to answer this question regardless of the age of a child. Highly popular, home kits significantly contributed to the rise in number of paternity tests taken between 1991 and 2000. The overall figures doubled to 300,000 a year in America alone (see paternity testing research).
1. Purchase your kit online or at a pharmacy. A typical kit will include 4 cotton swabs (which look like Q-tips), that is 2 swabs for each tested person. You should also receive an envelope for each swab and a larger return mailing envelope to hold all the swab envelopes.
Home Testing Vs Legal Testing: What Is The Difference? Companies which offer home kits for paternity testing claim that the only difference between a home test and a more expensive legal paternity testing is documentation. In a legal situation a Chain of Custody has to be established – that is, a documental process whereby the source of the sample can be confirmed. When this test is carried out at home, without the presence of a clinic employee, the source of the sample cannot be confirmed. However, results-wise, these companies claim that once the sample is sent to their laboratory, just as stringent test procedures are followed, so the results are equally as accurate. The counter claim to this is that companies who only offer paternity home test kits are more likely to work outside of industry protocols and laboratory work may be carried out by inexperienced staff. To avoid this, always check that a kit is accredited by the AABB (previously known as the American Association of Blood Banks). Why Use A Paternity Home Test Kit? If you use an accredited paternity home test kit it should provide a result which is near 99 percent accurate. If you do not need a legally binding result, then a home testing kit can offer the peace of mind you may have been looking for. Popular AABB accredited kit suppliers include DNA Identifiers, Easy-DNA.com and Paternity USA. Home test kits average between €180 and €500. Prices increase in line with the amount of people to be tested (child, alleged father and/or mother). Be aware of some websites offering kits for less than $100, they may charge extra for the laboratory analysis when you go to check out. Additionally, if you are in a hurry, expect stiff charges for expedited results. You could be charged another $200 for a 24 hour turn around.
