Both are caused when a pore becomes blocked with excess oil and dead skin cells. When whiteheads form the pore remains closed. When a blackhead forms the pore is opened and the skin pigment turns black on exposure to the air.

Occurs when a pore becomes blocked and filled with oil, bacteria and dead skin cells. The pus collects deep in the skin and forms a painful sac called a cyst. Cysts are more likely than any other type of acne lesion to cause scarring.

Small hard spots that can feel like sandpaper.
Acne Nodules
Acne Nodules
Large lumpy, inflamed pus filled papules or spots that lodge deep in the skin. They can leave some of the worst type of acne scarring. The term cyst and nodule is often used interchangeably because they appear very similar.
