RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

HIP ARTHRITISOsteoarthritis is the most common cause of hip arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease which over a number of years wears always the cartilage of the joints and bones. It causes inflammation, pain and eventually restricted movement.

HIP SURGERY

Hip replacement surgery involves removing the diseased hip joint and replacing it with an artificial one (prosthesis). Following surgery and rehabilitation, the patient should enjoy pain relief and restored motion to the hip.

SIGNS OF GOUT

Gout causes arthritic pain when uric acid builds up in the joints. It is a painful condition which normally only affects one joint, usually the big toe, ankle or knee. Pain typically starts at night and is described as an extremely painful throbbing. The joint area appears red and warm and is often too painful to touch.

HAND ARTHRITIS

Arthritis, which literally means inflamed joint, can occur in any of the joints in the body. However, it tends to be most noticeable when it affects the hands and fingers. Although there are hundreds of types of arthritis, the most common form which affects the hands is osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and post-traumatic arthritis.

SIGNS OF LUPUS

Butterfly rash indicating lupus. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation - not just of the joints but also of the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, lungs and brain. Other signs include a butterfly rash across the nose and fever after exposure to sunlight. Early signs include aches and pains of the joints.

PSORIATIC ARTHRITIS

Swollen skin, red scaly patches of skin associated with psoriatic arthritis.

How osteoarthritis progresses.
Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage (the protective tissue that surrounds the ends of bones, allowing them to glide over each other when we move) wears away. The exposed bones grate against each other, causing friction and pain. Eventually the bones grow lumps on the sides and develop fluid filled cysts which make movement even more difficult.
