WHERE BREAST CANCER STARTS

Breast cancer starts in the milk ducts. This is the early stage which is not usually detectable even by mammogram.

EARLY SIGNS OF BREAST CANCER
Signs of breast cancer: The breast starts to appear dimpled and uneven, rather like cellulite and the skin pores might be enlarged.

BREAST INFLAMMATION

Inflammatory Breast Cancer
Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare form of breast cancer that causes the breast to appear inflamed, swollen and warm to touch. It spreads very quickly and is usually treated more aggressively than most other types of breast cancer. Inflammatory breast cancer accounts for about 1 to 5 percent of all breast cancers reported in the United States. The 5 year survival rate is 34 percent compared to 84 percent with other types of breast cancer.

PUCKERED SKIN

Breast cancer sign: Puckered areas of skin.

NIPPLE DISCHARGE

Nipple discharge: Discharge is noted in about 5 to 12 percent of breast cancer cases. Nipple discharge in a woman who is not pregnant is not necessarily abnormal. One or both breasts may produce a discharge either spontaneously or by squeezing the nipples. Discharge may look yellow, green, brown, clear or bloody. Any discharge not related to pregnancy should be investigated by a doctor.

Severe bloody discharge is more likely to be breast cancer.

BREAST LUMPS

Breast lump with retracted nipple. A breast lump which is rock-hard, painless and has irregular sharp edges is likely to be cancerous. However breast cancer lumps can also be soft and rounded.

Lump on woman's right breast (looking at the picture, the lump is on your left). The breast is also enlarged.

NIPPLE RETRACTION

Nipple Retraction: Breast cancer sign.

LUMPECTOMY

Lumpectomy: Breast-saving procedure. A lumpectomy is performed to remove a breast lump. Nearly all lumpectomies will require radiation therapy after surgery; this is to ensure no cancer cells remain hidden in the breast area.

Scar (woman's right breast) after lumpectomy.

MASTECTOMY
Mastectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the entire breast. All of the breast tissue is cut away, sometimes also with nearby tissue.

Breast reconstruction surgery after mastectomy (including nipple reconstruction).

BREAST RECONSTRUCTION BEFORE & AFTER

Woman who has undergone total mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgery. Surgery to replace the nipples has yet to be completed.
