Embryo Transfer

Overview of the IVF Process. Eggs are retrieved from the ovary, and fertilized in a lab. The embryos are incubated for a few days to allow them to divide and grow. They are then transferred into the womb.

EGG RETRIEVAL

The retrieval (follicular aspiration) of the egg is done with the aid of ultrasound guidance. The ultrasound directs a long thin needle to the ovaries and the eggs are sucked out into a test tube. It is usually performed under general anesthesia. Your partner's sperm will be required on this day.

INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)

ICSI is increasingly being used as part of IVF. The procedure involves injecting a single sperm directly into the egg with a needle. The alternative is to mix the sperm with the egg in a dish in the hope that it will fertilize naturally. ICSI raises the odds of fertilization.

EMBYRO TRANSFER

Embryo transfer: The embryos are taken out of incubation and are placed in the woman's womb using a thin tube (catheter) inserted through the vagina. If the embryo sticks to the womb, it is said to have implanted, and pregnancy occurs.
