POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYMPTOMS

Swollen Ovary with PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition where there is an imbalance in a woman's female sex hormones. This imbalance can cause a cluster of problems, including changes in her menstrual cycle as well as multiple fluid filled blisters to form on her ovaries, difficulties getting pregnant and skin problems like acne.

OVARIAN DRILLING

A device makes small burns in the enlarged ovaries. The aim is to reduce the amount of androgen and luteinizing hormones released by the ovaries. Excess levels of these hormones causes PCOS symptoms. Studies show that up to 80 percent of patients who undergo this surgery report benefits.

HAIR LOSS

Hair Loss Caused by PCOS

Male patterned baldness is a common sign of polycystic ovaries and is called androgenic alopecia. Women with this problem may find hair thins on the head but becomes coarser on the face.

ACNE

Traditionally acne occurs in adolescence, but where PCOS exists it may appear during adulthood.

SKIN TAGS

Skin Tags Caused by PCOS

Women with PCOS are prone to skin tags. These are thick lumps of skin which look like warts and often appear on the neck, eyelids, bra area or armpits. They are quite harmless but can be removed by a dermatologist if desired for cosmetic reasons.

FACIAL HAIR

More than 70 percent of women with PCOS experience hirsutism, a condition which results in excessive hair growth. Hirsutism causes the growth of thick hair in areas where they ordinarily only occur in men (face and back for example).
