Sexually Transmitted Diseases

SCABIES

Scabies is caused by tiny mites that burrow under the skin and deposit their eggs and feces. It causes itching.

SYPHILIS

Secondary syphilis (second stage) starts in 2 - 3 months after the infection. This stage starts with a sore throat, high fever, general weakness and other symptoms that remind of flu. Also, the whole body (especially mouth, sole of feet, palms of hands and arms) covers with syphilitic rash.

HPV VIRUS

The only visible sign of the HPV virus is genital warts. There are over 40 different types of HPV viruses that can be transferred sexually. Only certain types cause genital warts - and even if you have this strain of HPV you don't necessarily develop warts (some people remain symptom-free). Other types of genital HPV viruses can cause cervical cancer - these are known as the high-risk HPV viruses.

GENITAL WARTS

Genital warts are caused by a particular strain of the HPV virus.

PUBIC LICE

Also known as crabs, pubic lice are parasites that live in pubic hair. While not a serious threat to health, cause agonizing itching.

GONORRHEA

Gonorrhea: Discharge from the penis which may be milky white or another color. Symptoms are less obvious in women.

Gonorrhea infection of the eye. If a person touches infected genitals and then touches their eye, the bacterium can spread.

Gonorrhea spreads easily and can cause infertility in both sexes if untreated. Simply taking antibiotics stops the infection. Common symptoms include burning during urination and discharge, but often there are no early symptoms. If untreated the infection may cause skin rashes or spread to the joints and blood.

CHLAMYDIA

One of the most common STDs, chlamydia often produces no symptoms. It can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility.

TRICHOMONAS

Trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite which is transmitted sexually. It produces a foul smelling vaginal discharge which is frothy and white or green. Read also about types of vaginitis.

GENITAL HERPES

Primary symptom of genital herpes is an outbreak of painful sores in the genital area. There is no cure and it may lay dormant for years before acting up.

CHANCROID

Chancroid is a relatively rare STD which causes sores on the genitals which may be mistaken for herpes or early stage syphilis.
