| Is There A Cure For Fibromyalgia?
No, unfortunately as scientists are still not sure what causes fibromyalgia, they have not been able to identify a cure. This means if a doctor ever promises you a cure, find another doctor, they do not understand your condition. The good news however is that with new advances in fibromyalgia treatment occurring all the time, there is much that can be done to manage the condition so that it doesn't destroy your quality of life. So what do we mean by 'managing' fibromyalgia? Basically we are talking about managing your pain so that you can function normally. It does not mean you will be cured of pain, but it may be reduced enough so that you are not aware of it most of the time (this is the ideal solution). When deciding a treatment plan, your doctor should ask you how bad your pain usually is, on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being the least severe and 10 being debilitating. Everyone's threshold for pain is different, so using a scale is one of the best ways to assess your personal condition. This is important because studies show that when women report pain, they are taken less seriously than men and may be under-treated as a result. Being aware of your own pain level will help ensure you seek the right treatment. One way to do this is to keep a symptoms diary as follows (examples included):

In your diary, note any treatment you took in response to pain, and how you reacted to it. It is also useful to mention stress levels on that day as this will help identify a potential cause. So what is a reasonable time to try a new treatment before you say it doesn't work? Firstly, if your doctor tells you to take a pill for a month, but you only take it once or twice a week, then you haven't given it a fair trial. Follow your doctor's advice closely. If your doctor tells you, you should be feeling better in a few weeks, but you're not. It's not working. Go back to him, and discuss another treatment plan.
